Envisaging enhancements for the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to embrace future growth opportunities

Hong Kong is recognized as one of the world’s leading Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) destinations. Established in 1988, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) has earned a reputation as a prestigious and successful multi-purpose venue for MICE, as well as an iconic Hong Kong landmark. The complex provides a total of 91,500 sqm of rentable space and plays host to about 1,000 local and international events, including exhibitions, conferences, corporate meetings, entertainment events, seminars and banquets in the course of a typical year.

The regional growth potential for conference and exhibition venues is immense, given China’s role as the major growth engine for the global economy. It is expected that MICE will generate sales worth billions of dollars every year for cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). While Hong Kong sits proudly at the centre of this megalopolis, it is facing challenges and competition from cities in the GBA and the Asia Pacific region, and will have to work hard to take full advantage of its strategic positioning.

Responsible for the day-to-day running of the HKCEC, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Limited (HML), under NWS Holdings Limited, oversees administration, marketing, business development, bookings, scheduling, event co-ordination, building maintenance, and security of the facilities. It also manages food and beverage operations at the HKCEC, including restaurants and catering services.

To grasp the growth potential of the industry and retain its premier position in the world, HML constantly seeks to enhance and improve its services and infrastructure, for long- term development and anticipating the growing demand for MICE services. Inevitably, it also needs to tackle issues that sporadically arise from unexpected socioeconomic and even world health situations.
