What's On

Mrs Laura Cha is one of Hong Kong's most well-known female business leaders. She has served as a vice chairman at the China Securities Regulatory Commission – making her the first Hongkonger and first non-Mainlander to take on a vice-ministerial position in the Central Government -- and she is currently the first female chief of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX).

She is also a non-official member of Hong Kong's Executive Council, and is not shy about making her views known on how the Government can enhance Hong Kong's economic growth and development. Her previous roles at the Securities and Futures Commission and the Financial Services Development Council all worked towards the common objective of ensuring that Hong Kong's financial markets grew robustly.

With the increasing integration of Hong Kong and Mainland markets, how can we dovetail most effectively with the Mainland? What can and should be done to enhance the competitiveness of the exchange, and fend off competition from our overseas counterparts in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, New York and London?

Mrs Laura Cha, Chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, will address these and related issues during her talk at the Chamber as part of our "Town Hall Forum Series" on 4 October.

Speaker(s) Mrs Cha is a member of the Executive Council of the Government of Hong Kong, Chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd and a member of Financial Leaders Forum.

Mrs Cha is the Non-Executive Deputy Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, an Independent Non-Executive Director of HSBC Holdings plc, and a Non-Executive Director of Unilever plc. She is also a Senior International Advisor of Foundation Assets Management Sweden AB and a member of Sotheby's International Advisory Board. In addition, she is Vice Chairman of the International Advisory Council of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and a Director of the World Federation of Exchanges.

Mrs Cha became the first, and to-date, the only person outside Mainland China to join the Central Government of the People's Republic of China at the vice-ministerial rank when she was appointed as Vice Chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission in January 2001. She served in that position until September 2004. Mrs Cha worked for Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong from 1991 to 2000, becoming its Deputy Chairman in 1998. She was also Chairman of The Financial Services Development Council of Hong Kong from January 2013 to July 2018.

She was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star in 2001, a Gold Bauhinia Star in 2009 and the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2017 by the Hong Kong Government for her public service.
