China's 14th Five-Year Plan: Economic Prospects and Role of Hong Kong

Chamber CEO George Leung hosted a two-day Forum on 16 and 17 June, with speakers representing government, academia and business discussing the impact of China’s 13th Five Year Plan and some of the topics likely to be included in the 14th Plan.

On the first day of the forum, panelists discussed China’s development model moving from scale to efficiency, the history of Silk Road cooperation, Greater Bay Area opportunities, as well as some of the challenges ahead such as deglobalisation and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The speakers were Andrew Au, Government Economist, HKSAR; Hongbin Cai, Dean and Chair of Economics, Faculty of Business and Economics, The University of Hong Kong; Thomas Chan, Director, One Belt One Road Research Institute of the Chu Hai College of Higher Education; and Eric Ma, Chief Executive Officer, NWS Holdings.

On the second day the panel looked in more depth at Hong Kong’s role in the Five Year Plans, with speakers KC Chan, Chairman, WeLab Bank; Nick Chan, Partner, Squire Patton Boggs; Monica Lee-Müller, Managing Director, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre; Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals; and Albert Wong, CEO, The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. They shared their thoughts on the opportunities for Hong Kong in the 14th Five Year Plan, which will begin next year. The panel discussion covered topics including maintaining Hong Kong as an international financial center, the future development of the convention and exhibition industry, cargo transportation, and developing technology such as biotech, AI, Robotics and 3D printing.
