Greater Bay Area Corner

The Greater Bay Area (GBA) consists of the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao as well as nine cities of the Pearl River Delta region: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Jiangmen, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Huizhou and Zhaoqing. With a population of 67.65 million residing across a total area of 56,500 sq km, this region is one of the most developed and vibrant areas in China. The development of the GBA initiative is intended to strengthen infrastructure links among the cities involved and stimulate economic cooperation. This corner provides members with updated information on policy and development of the GBA.

Meeting with the United Front Work Department, Guangzhou Nansha

Ruan Xiaohong, a member of CPC Nansha District Committee, led a delegation to the Chamber on 10 February, where they were welcomed by China Committee Chairman Eric Fok.

Ruan introduced Nansha’s plan for deepening co-operation with other GBA cities, including Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Nansha, which was launched in June last year. The plan focuses on five key development directions: innovation and technology, youth innovation and entrepreneurship, quality investment, regulatory and connectivity issues, and high-quality urban development.

Fok said that the Chamber would continue to serve as a connector between Hong Kong and Nansha enterprises, as well as be the facilitator to help youths seize opportunities in the GBA.

Both parties also had a preliminary discussion on the Chamber’s mission to Nansha in March. The visit will be our first trip to GBA since the pandemic. Members will have the opportunity to experience how Nansha has transformed over the past few years. More details will be announced once confirmed.

Shenzhen General Chamber of Commerce Visits Chamber

Qin Jingteng, Vice Chairman of Shenzhen Federation of Industry & Commerce (Shenzhen General Chamber of Commerce), led a delegation to visit the Chamber on February 3, where they were welcomed by HKGCC Deputy Chairman Agnes Chan, China Committee Vice Chairman Edmond Yew and members. Qin pointed out that currently there are over 40,000 Hong Kong enterprises in Shenzhen, which have contributed significantly to Shenzhen’s growth in the past 30 years. They hope Hong Kong businesses will continue to invest in Shenzhen to continue the city’s development.

Discussing Development of HTCZ

Ouyang Huiyu, Deputy District Mayor of Futian District People’s Government, who is also Director of the Construction and Development Affairs Office of Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone (HTCZ), and Zhu Junwei, Deputy Executive Director of HTCZ, visited the Chamber on February 1, where they were welcomed by GBA Working Group Convenor Petrina Tam and members. Ouyang introduced the latest developments in Futian and HTCZ. The zone, which straddles the boundary between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, will focuses on the development of advanced and finance technologies.

Meeting with Fan Xinlin, Vice President of CCPIT Guangdong

Fan Xinlin, Vice President of CCPIT Guangdong, led a visit to the Chamber on 16 January. The delegation was welcomed by China Committee Chairman Eric Fok and GBA Working Group Convenor Petrina Tam. Fan invited the Chamber to join forces with organizations in the Greater Bay Area to promote the development of Guangdong and Hong Kong. They also exchanged ideas on fostering further cooperation.
