Dr Keith
Chan, Head of the Department of Computing, explained to the 43 members who joined the tour
that the concept of the Intelligent Home was not only to automate everyday chores at home,
but also to make the home a safer place to live and to protect it from intruders.
Unlike the latest technologies
developed by companies' R&D labs, one of the university's criteria for developing
products was that they be affordable, explained Wong Mo-han (above, right), the
Deputy Director of the Department of Computing. As an example, she demonstrated the palm
recognition access system which recognises a palm print within 1.5 second, and costs a
fraction of the price of similar systems currently on the market.
Members also saw firsthand other
technologies that the students were working on, which included Virtual Programming Lab for
Online Distance Learning, Motion Retargeting from Motion Captured Data, and Severe Weather
Forecasting, among others.
