Honourable John Tsang, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, exchanged views
with members at the Chamber's Town Hall Forum Series on December 11. To encourage a free

discussions on December 1.

Trade in Goods under CEPA |
| A
seminar on "Trade in Goods under CEPA" was co-organized by the Chamber with the
Commercial Office, Department of Economic Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People's
Government in the HKSAR and four other major local chambers on November 19. Emphasis
was put on the elaboration and clarification of the CEPA provisions regarding zero-tariff
granted to 273 Mainland product codes meeting the CEPA "Made in Hong Kong"
rules, as well as their implementation and related details. Senior officials from China's
Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and the General Administration of Customs and
official from the Trade and Industry Department in Hong Kong were the guest speakers. |
Fumiya Kokubu,
President of the Hong Kong Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKJCCI) hosted a
joint luncheon with the Chamber on November 17, at which Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon spoke on
the recent developments of CEPA. At the luncheon, Anthony Nightingale, Chairman, HKGCC,
and Chamber members mingled with senior members of HKJCCI.
Shalini Luchman
Cheeneebash, Assistant Manager, Mauritius Industrial Development Authority and Marie-Francoise
Petitjean, Food Surveys France, called on the Chamber on November 25 and were
received by Eva Chow, Director, International Business. Ms Cheeneebash was interested in
exploring possible opportunities for trade cooperation between Hong Kong and Mauritius.
Bruce Goldsworthy,
Manager, Advocacy Services, Manufacturers & Trade Group Services Division, met with
Eva Chow, Director of the Chamber's International Business Dvision, on December 3 to
obtain an update on the latest developments in Hong Kong.
Suresh Deora, Honorary
General Secretary of India-China Chamber of Commerce & Industry, called on the Chamber
on December 3 and met with Dr Eden Woon, Chamber CEO. Mr Deora was in Hong Kong for
the Natural Products Expo Asia 2003.
Yin
Xiaojing, Secretary General of the China Overseas Friendship Association led a
delegation to visit the Chamber on November 20 and met with Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon.
Members of the delegation came from Overseas Friendship Associations all over China, and
were interested in fostering closer co-operation with the Chamber.
The
Second Shanghai-Hong Kong Metropolitan Conference was held in Shanghai on
November 25. David Lie, Chamber China Committee Chairman, led a 40-member delegation to
attend the conference, which was co-organized by the Chamber, the Hong Kong-Shanghai
Economic Development Association, Shanghai Chinese Overseas Friendship Association, TDC,
and the Shanghai Hong Kong-Shanghai Economic Development Association. Henry Tang,
Financial Secretary of the HKSAR, and Jiang Sixian, Deputy Mayor of Shanghai, gave keynote
speeches at the conference, and Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon delivered a speech on
"Development, Cooperation and Opportunities for Shanghai after CEPA."
Liu
Ajin, Vice Chairman of CCPIT Shaanxi Sub-Council, visited the Chamber on December
1. Mr Liu met with Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon and exchanged ideas on possible ways that the
two chambers could expand cooperation in the future.
Xu Yan,
Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Jiangsu Sub-Council,
led a delegation to the Chamber on December 1. The visitors exchanged views on CEPA
with Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon, and expressed their wish to continue mutual cooperation
with the Chamber in the future.
Zhu
Xinmin, Chief Secretary of Yunnan Administration Bureau of Industry and Commerce,
led a 19-member delegation to attend a business-matching meeting with Chamber members on
December 5. During the meeting Eva Chow, Director, International Business, gave a brief
introduction of the Chamber to visitors.
Wang
Jingwen, Vice Director of Administration Committee of Qingdao Economic and
Technical Development Zone, called on the Chamber on December 8. Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon
welcomed the visitors and signed an MOU on behalf of the Chamber to foster future
cooperation with the zone.
Zou Erjun,
Vice Director of Fujian Hongkong Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee, led an informal
delegation to the Chamber on December 8, where they had a friendly exchange of views on
CEPA with Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon.
Yan Jingpin,
Deputy Director of Information Office of The People's Government of Guangdong Province,
led a press delegation to call on the Chamber on December 9. Reporters from various
media in Guangdong Province interviewed Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon about Hong Kong's
economic development and the role of CEPA in that growth.
Cong Guozhang,
Vice Mayor of Harbin, met with Chamber CEO Dr Eden Woon on December 11 to explore
opportunities for cooperating with the Chamber to promote Harbin, northeast China's old
industrial base, to Hong Kong companies.

Chamber
Senior Director Dr WK Chan spoke on CEPA at Marymount College on November 24, and
at the "Greater China Freight Forwarding & Logistics Conference" organised
by HK Air Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association on November 25.
The CEPA SME
Expo took place on December 2-3. The Chamber was a supporting organization
of the event and set up a counter to answer members' enquiries on CEPA at the Expo.
The
Chinese World Event Seminar, organized by the French Chamber of Commerce in
association with the Chamber and other business associations, took place on November 21.
Over 300 people participated in the event, including the Honorable Donald Tsang, Chief
Secretary for Administration of HKSAR, Francois Loos, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade
of France, and Long Yongtu, Secretary General, Boao Forum for Asia. Chamber CEO Dr Eden
Woon moderated a session at the seminar on China's manufacturing sector.
Alexei
Kalashnik, International Programs Director, OPORA Russian SME Association, led a
delegation to the Chamber on November 25, where they were received by Peter Gordon,
Chairman of the Russian Interest Group. A number of members of the Chamber also attended
the meeting to explore business opportunities with the delegates.
Tony Bridger
(right), Chief Executive of the Dorset Chamber of Commerce of the United Kingdom, called
on the Chamber on December 1. During his visit, Mr Bridger presented an honorary
membership certificate of the Dorset Chamber to Dr YS Cheung, Senior Director of the
Chamber.
Peter Gordon,
Chairman of the Russian Interest Group, spoke on "Getting Started in the Russian
Market" at a Chamber roundtable luncheon on December 11. Mr Gordon shared with
members his valuable experiences in doing business in Russia, which included both on the
problems and opportunities of doing business in the country.
Andrew
Sheng, Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission, exchanged views with
members on corporate governance at a breakfast meeting on 12 December. Liqun Jin, Vice
President of the Asian Development Bank and his colleague, Robert Bestani, Director
General of the Private Sector Finance Department, also participated in the meeting, and
shared with members the work of the Asian Development Bank.
Secretary for
Commerce, Industry and Technology John Tsang hosted a luncheon on the "No
Fakes" campaign on November 17. Chamber Senior Director Dr WK Chan attended the
luncheon. Through the official Hong Kong-Guangdong cooperation coordination group, this
Hong Kong campaign has now been extended to Guangdong.
The Chamber presented a seminar on Privatisation
of the Hong Kong International Airport on November 20, with IATA as the
co-orgnaiser. Experts from both home and abroad shared their views on how privatisation of
the airport should progress, which stimulated lively debate among the audience.

Betty Fung, Deputy Secretary for
Commerce, Industry and Technology, met with members of the Information Services Committee
on November 19 to discuss the "Digital 21" consultation paper. The Chamber
formulated a response and submitted it to the government on December 10.
Charlotte Chow, Senior Manager for
Business Policy at the Chamber, met with representatives of the Modernized Chinese
Medicine International Association on November 27. During the meeting, the government
proposals to revise the Undesirable Medical Advertisements Ordinance to regulate health
claims was discussed. The Chamber Retail Distribution Committee is being consulted on
these proposals.
