Joint Forum Explores Ways to Promote Closer Hong Kong / Guangdong Cooperation

On 6 September, about 120 businessmen, academics and senior government officials from both Hong Kong and Guangdong joined together at the "Joint Hong Kong / Guangdong Economic Forum" to brainstorm on fundamental issues confronting the strategic cooperation between the two places. The Forum is jointly organized by The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC), The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and The Guangdong Sub-Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT).

Speaking at the opening of the Joint Forum, the Financial Secretary Mr Antony Leung said: "As the industrial development in Guangdong moved up to a high-tech and high-value-added ladder, we need a new perspective to look at the cooperation between the two places."

"Hong Kong businesses should never be complacent about relying on the low cost of production in Guangdong. We should explore new opportunities for cooperation in areas such as high-tech industries, logistics services, professional services and tourism."

"This forum will give huge impetus to both the private and public sectors between the two places in working together to identify development options for mutual gains." Mr Leung added.

Topics discussed at the Forum include infrastructure, environmental protection, transportation, boundary and customs, industry and trade, financial services, logistics services as well as professional services.

Concluding the Forum, HKGCC Director Dr Eden Woon said: "There was general agreement on the benefits of closer cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong, and agreement also on what the future positioning of the region should be -- a financial hub, a logistics hub, a manufacturing hub, and a high-tech hub. The discussion then centered on the issues that need to be tackled in order to reach the potential of this cooperation. This was a very good start for more detailed work to be followed later."
