Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce
Welcomes Bush Presidency

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce welcomes the election of George W Bush to be the next President of the United States. The Chamber is encouraged by Bush's free trade stance, his support for globalization, and the fact that the US business community overwhelmingly supported his candidacy. With China about to enter into the WTO, the Chamber believes that the Bush Administration will improve ties with China to further American business interests in China, thereby benefitting Hong Kong.

"In promoting free trade, Mr. Bush does not have the constraints on him that his opponent would have had with labor, environment, and human rights constituents -- many of whom are not in favour of globalization or a better relationship with China. Therefore, Hong Kong should be looking forward to Bush's presidency," Chamber Chairman Mr. C. C. Tung said.

On China, Chamber Director Dr. Eden Woon added that Bush's foreign policy advisors are actually experienced strategic realists that appreciate the importance of China politically and economically. Dr. Woon said that the United States under Bush may see even a better relationship with China, which would be good news for Hong Kong business people who are immediately affected by any downturn in US-China relations and by instability in the region.
