Yesterday the Silk Road -- Today ChinaTradeWorld.com

CIEC Executive Director Celene Loo: "It is a one-stop B-to-B e-commerce portal for buyers and sellers around the world."

Mainland China took a technological leap into the world of e-commerce on Feb. 28 with the launch of its ambitious Web portal www.ChinaTradeWorld.com, by China International Electronic Commerce Hong Kong (CIEC).

CIEC is a joint venture between the PRC's China International Electronic Commerce Centre's (CIECC) Infoshare Technology Company. Ltd., and new ePOCH Information Co. Ltd.

"This Web site is the next Silk Road," CIEC Director Benjamin Fok said at its launch.

CIEC Executive Director Celene Loo said the company has been three years in the making. "We have been talking to the Internet arm of MOFTEC, which is CIECC, for over a year, and we managed to close it only last September," she said.

While the portal is using the phrase "Yesterday the Silk Road today ChinaTradeWorld.com," far more people are travelling this route to do business with China, with the site claiming 600,000 hits a day.

The portal differs from many trade portals because it is an end-to-end solution provider, Ms Loo said.

The site purportedly links these visitors to 178,000 Chinese businesses registered with MOFTEC - ranging from farms to factories located in as far-flung places as Yunnan - with overseas businesses seeking suppliers.

Users of the portal can view products, research a manufacturer's operations and place orders backed by a staff of 600 customer service representatives spread over 74 cities.

"These are professional sales people who have been trained; they are people on the ground collecting the data and feeding it back to Beijing. This is why people really appreciate this Web site because the quality of the site is very high, its not a yellow pages list," Ms Loo said.

Besides matching buyers and sellers, the site offers English translations of Chinese laws, trade news, investment services as well as information on public tender projects in the mainland.

A two-way have auction engine, which will allow buyers to seek products and companies to sell goods, is also planned to come online in the second or third quarter this year, she said.
