The Territory Development Department (TDD) today (July 17) commissioned a $ 32.6 million design and construction consultancy for Central Reclamation Phase III. Under the reclamation plan, a total of 18 hectares of land will be reclaimed along the seafront of the Star Ferry Pier, Central from Man Yiu Street to Lung King Street. A TDD spokesman said the site formation works would provide land for the construction of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass and other supporting road networks to alleviate the traffic congestion along Connaught Road Central, Harcourt Road and Gloucester Road. It would also provide land for the construction of the Airport Railway Extended Overrun Tunnel, said the spokesman, adding that the Airport Railway Hong Kong Station would then be put into full operation following the completion of the tunnel. In addition, the North Hong Kong Island Line will be constructed across the reclaimed area. The new railway corridor will help relieve the congestion of the MTRC Island Line and MTRC Tsuen Wan Line Nathan Road Corridor by providing an alternative link for commuters from the North West New Territories and Tseung Kwan O areas to Hong Kong Island. The detailed design and preparation of tender documents will take 17 months to complete and tenders for the construction works will be invited in December 2001. Construction is scheduled to start in April 2002 for completion in four years. An agreement on the consultancy was signed today between the Project Manager of TDD's Hong Kong Island and Islands Development Office, Mr Cheung Tai-yan, and representatives of the Atkins China Limited. End/Monday, July 17, 2000
