HKGCC Statement on Protests

For Immediate Release

The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) was deeply saddened to see the demonstrations yesterday grow increasingly violent.

“We totally respect the right for people to express their views and opinions peacefully, but we strongly condemn resorting to violence,” said Aron Harilela, HKGCC Chairman.

HKGCC agrees with the underlying principle of the extradition bill. However, the large-scale demonstrations and protests show that the community still has serious apprehensions. “We sincerely urge the Government to continue to listen to stakeholders and engage in meaningful dialogue with the public,” said Harilela.

Chamber CEO Shirley Yuen added that the business community is concerned about the way things are developing.

“We call for restraint from all parties to ensure that this issue will not undermine business confidence in Hong Kong and our international reputation,” said Yuen.
