History
& Mission
The Hong Kong General Chamber
of Commerce is the oldest -- founded in 1861 -- and largest -- around 4,000 corporate members -- business
organization in Hong Kong. We are international in character, with membership
comprising of multi-national companies, Chinese mainland companies, and Hong Kong
companies. We are a self-funding, nonprofit organization, and as such, we are a truly
independent body representing the entire scope of trade, service and industry in the Hong
Kong Special Administrative Region.
Our loyalties lie first and foremost with our members, acting as
their voice in advising the SAR Government on matters affecting businesses and the
economy, providing members with business information and opportunities, and facilitating
networking through a variety of Chamber activities.
We also take an initiative to promote Hong Kong as an international
business center in the heart of Asia, and pledge our confidence in Hong Kong now and into
the future.
Hong Kong is now part of China, but it remains an international
city. The Chamber acts as an international bridge, connecting Hong Kong business with
the Chinese mainland and the rest of the world.
History
The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1861, merely
20 years after the city of Hong Kong was founded. Our original membership consisted
of 62 companies and banks. At the inaugural meeting, almost 140 years ago, the
Chamber's role was clearly set out:
"The object of the Chamber shall be to watch over and protect
the general interests of Commerce, to collect information on all matters of interest to
the Mercantile Community, and to use every means within its power for the removal of
evils, the redress of grievances, and the promotion of the common good; to communicate
with authorities and other thereupon; to form a code of practice whereby the
transaction of business may be simplified and facilitated; to receive references; and to
arbitrate between disputants -- the decisions in such references to be recorded for future
guidance."
Today, corporate membership stands at around 4,000 and the spirit of
the Chamber's original objective remains, as demonstrated in our mission statement:
"To promote, represent and safeguard the interests of the Hong Kong business
community." In short, we help our members do business. |
